General
National Moot Court Competition in Child Welfare and Adoption Law to be held at Capital Law School in Columbus, OH on March 14th and March 15th. This year’s topic is “Children’s Best Interest & Multicultural Issues in Adoption”. The problem will be released on December 3rd and late registration deadline is January 4th. For more information, check the website. There can be 2-3 students from each law school. If you are interested in participating, contact Stacy and funding for the registration fee can be arranged.
Our regular November meeting will take place on the Thursday, the 8th at noon in room 1002. Anita Levin, Associate Director of Lucas County Court Appointed Special Advocate, will be joining us to discuss volunteer opportunities. The next training is in January 2008. You can go ahead and download the CASA Application, complete it and bring it to the meeting if you are interested in participating in this great program. Slots are limited and as based on first come, first serve process. You’ll get to become a sworn officer of the court, participate in the investigation of abuse/neglect allegations, and make recommendations to the court which are in the best interest of the child(ren) you are assigned. It also provides a great chance to understand the inner-workings of the child welfare system and the juvenile court system. You’ll get the opportunity to network and meet many of the judges and several local attorneys who also volunteer as Guardians-Ad-Litem.
FJLS, along with Law Career Services, is pleased to feature Professor Angela Upchurch, Associate Professor of Law at Capital University Law School and the Academic Director of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy. Continue reading this entry…

Meeting Minutes
Thanks for the great turn out last week to see Judge Lewandowski! I’d love to have an even larger turnout for Prof. Upchurch next Wednesday, Oct 24th. Hot Topics in Adoption Law will take place in Room 1013. We’ll be taking her out to lunch following so if you have a true interest in this area of law and would like to pick her brain further, please let me know you’re interested in that as well. I know some of you have class at 1pm and can’t make it but this is a great opportunity for the rest of you!
So, please RSVP once again for next Wednesday’s talk, from 12-1pm. We’re being co-sponsored by LCS so we’ll try to do something other than pizza and get plenty of sandwiches to go around if we decide on that route. Also, a quick recap of FJLS business from the meeting:
- Halloween Bake Sale - Oct 29-31. Please, please reply back if you can contribute a baked good to the sale. Right now, we only have 3 people who have signed up thus far. Just reply and I will add you to the list.
- Fall Ball - I’m hosting a pre-party at my house for Fall Ball which is just a mile or so from Heatherdowns Country Club. If you’d like to attend, let me know! We’ll get started around 6pm and have cabs transport us to the party!
- Community Service - We are participating in the Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family and have adopted two families. We should be getting more information as to the make-up of the families so we can begin shopping for them. Also - proceeds from our bake sale will be used to donate gifts to the Lucas County Children’s Services Teen Gift program. Teens are often overlooked during the holiday season since most people donate toys so we want to help out these deserving kids as well!
- Membership - Last call for membership and dues! If you plan on remaining a member but haven’t paid your dues, please email nina.palmer@utoledo.edu and arrange to get that taken care of! Your dues help us pay for our meeting expenses as well as costs associated with bringing in speakers and for future fun social events!
- SBA Representative - We currently have one full-time SBA rep and one back up. Our full-timer will be stepping down next semester and I’d love to get an additional 1-2 people so we can set up a rotating schedule so the burden will not fall on one person all the time. I f you’re interested in this position, let me know by Friday. This is especially a great opportunity for 1L’s to add to your resume and become part of the executive board for FJLS.
- Child Welfare Fellowships - For those of you interested in doing public interest work next summer, particularly within the child welfare field, please let me know! I was lucky enough to participate in the Bergstrom program from the U of Michigan School of Law and they fund up to $4K for the summer if you are unable to locate funding elsewhere. It’s a great opportunity to head up to Ann Arbor for a week, meet like-minded people, and get trained in a large range of activities pertaining to child welfare law. The deadline is in early January so best to get started now!
- Next Meeting - Our next regular meeting will be Nov 8th. We will have Anita Levin with CASA visiting us and going over the volunteer opportunities to serve as a Guardian Ad Litem for Abused/Neglected Children. We are going to try to do two meetings, one during our regular noon-time and another at 5pm for those who work during the day. If you are only able/prefer to have an evening meeting, let me know. If there isn’t enough interest, I don’t want to ask Anita to come to school again.
- Website - Our website is up and running! ( utfjls.org) I am working on uploading outlines for classes as well as creating a database of study materials available when it gets closer to exam time. They can be checked out for your use for up to 1-2 weeks depending on whether anyone else has requested them or not. If you plan to use the site’s features such as the outlines and such, please go ahead and register for use.
